　　It must have been a similar day 40 years ago when the designer first visited the apartment. ldquo;The door opened, and right in front of me, there was a window overlooking the garden,rdquo; Mr. Saint Laurent recalled in a Vogue Decoration interview in 1986. ldquo;And that was that.rdquo;

　　Sunlight streamed into the Grand Salon during one recent afternoon, lighting up the bare room that once had been home to the connoisseur duorsquo;s collection of art and furniture. 　　The main stairway goes from the Music Room to the lower level and the Schatzkammer, or Treasure Room, a theatrical Grange creation with an inlaid parquet floor. Its walls are covered with illuminated vitrines lined in silk velvet that were designed to display Mr. Saint Laurentrsquo;s collection of cameos.

　　The Library has the same dimensions and exposure as the Grand Salon on the floor above but the pale oak parquet and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves on three sides provide a warmer atmosphere. An empty panel once framed an Edward Burne-Jones tapestry now in the Museacute;e drsquo;Orsay, a gift from Mr. Bergeacute;.

　　Straight ahead is the Grand Salon, a 70-square-meter, or 750-square-foot, rectangular room with a 3.8-meter, or 12.5-foot, high ceiling. Art Deco oak paneling covers the walls, and five tall, modernist French windows offer views of the garden. Philippe Mugnier, director of the Bergeacute;-Saint Laurent foundation, said the apartment was renovated in 1927-28 by a wealthy American gentleman who was ruined in the 1929 crash.

　　Mr. Saint Laurent and Mr. Bergeacute; moved into the apartment in 1970 and bought it eight years later. Located on the rue de Babylone in the heart of the Faubourg Saint-Germain, the turn-of-the-century red brick and stone building is set back across a courtyard, screened from the street by another residential building. The duplex has a private entrance on the courtyard where there is reserved parking for two cars.

　　The master bedroom suite, on the same level, was created by the renowned French decorator (and YSL friend) Jacques Grange in the aquatic shades that the late couturier adored. His taste also produced the selection of mirrors above the fireplace and below, in the oak-paneled dressing room and master bath. ldquo;I canrsquo;t live in a room that doesnrsquo;t have a mirror, another space,rdquo; the couturier told Vogue Decoration. ldquo;When there isnrsquo;t one, the room is dead.rdquo;

　　ldquo;Mr. Saint Laurent was a man of ritual in his daily life,rdquo; Mr. Mugnier said, explaining that the designer would have a drink in the Grand Salon, lunch in the dining room and coffee here in the Library.

　　Also on the lower level is another master suite that had been serving as a television and film screening room. There also are staff accommodations.

　　An earlier version of this article said incorrectly that the property had been put on the market the week of April 26 and misidentified a real estate agency. It was listed the week of April 19, and Consultants Immobilier is one of the sales agents.

　　The first floor of the south-facing duplex is off the courtyard; the other, one floor down, is level with the garden.

　　Outdoors, the white marble terrace can be reached through five French windows in the Library. A walk around the garden of leafy trees, shrubbery,salvatore ferragamo, bamboo and white roses included views of an adjacent private park, which increases the duplexrsquo;s feeling of privacy.
